What we publish

AmphiBios publishes content from Amphibian Survival Alliance partners, grantees, and the broader conservation community. We welcome:

  • Long-form articles — In-depth project updates, research summaries, or thematic explorations
  • Field reports — First-hand accounts from conservation work in the field
  • Species spotlights — Focused pieces on a particular species or group
  • Conservation success stories — Wins worth celebrating and learning from
  • Opinion and commentary — Perspectives on challenges, opportunities, or the state of the field
  • Short communications — Brief updates, announcements, or concise contributions from the community
  • Practitioner toolkits — Skills-focused guides for conservation practitioners
  • From the Journals — Recently published peer-reviewed research, with citation and a brief summary (~150 words). Want to tell the full story behind your research? Submit a separate article alongside your publication highlight.
  • Opportunities — Job postings, funding opportunities, events, training, and calls for proposals

Not sure if your idea fits? Reach out at info@amphibians.org — we're happy to discuss.

What you'll need

Have these ready before starting the submission form:

  • Manuscript as a Word document (.docx), Markdown (.md), or LaTeX (.tex) file
  • Hero image — A landscape-oriented image, at least 1200px wide, to display at the top of your article (optional but encouraged)
  • Image credits and captions for all photos
  • 50-word summary of your article for the table of contents
  • Geographic region(s) your article focuses on
  • Conservation topics (1-3) from the ACAP chapter list to help readers find your work
  • Co-author details if applicable (names and email addresses)
  • Your bio (150 words max) and profile photo (optional but recommended)

Manuscript preparation

Submit manuscripts as .docx, .md, or .tex files. Structure your document with clear sections:

  • Title
  • Author name(s) and affiliation(s)
  • Main text
  • Acknowledgments (if applicable)
  • References (if applicable)
  • Figure and table captions

Write for a broad audience — conservation professionals, researchers, students, and amphibian enthusiasts. Keep your language accessible and define abbreviations on first use.

Non-English submissions welcome. We publish in English, but you're welcome to submit in the language you write best in. We'll translate your manuscript and work with you to make sure the English version accurately represents your work.

Word limits

Most articles should be around 1,500 words, with a maximum of 2,000 words. Practitioner toolkits can be longer if the content requires it.

These are guidelines, not hard limits. If your piece needs more space, just let us know.

References

If your article includes citations, use Nature referencing style. Number references sequentially as they appear in the text. Place citation numbers in parentheses and italicize them:

(1), (2, 3), (4–6)

List full references at the end of your manuscript in the order they appear.

Figures and tables

Submit high-quality images as separate files (JPEG, PNG, or WebP). Images should complement the text rather than duplicate it.

  • Label figures sequentially (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.)
  • For multi-panel figures, label parts as A, B, C and describe each in the caption
  • Provide concise captions and photo credits
  • Include any necessary permissions for third-party images

Embeddable content

Articles can include more than text and images. If your work involves video, audio, interactive maps, data visualizations, or other media, let us know — we can often embed these directly in your article.

Include the URL or embed link in your manuscript where you'd like it to appear, along with a brief note describing what it is. Our editorial team will handle the formatting.

Examples of content we can embed:

  • YouTube or Vimeo videos
  • Interactive maps (ArcGIS, Google Maps, etc.)
  • Audio recordings (calls, field audio)
  • Data dashboards or visualizations

We embed content hosted on external platforms — we're not able to host video, audio, or interactive files directly. Upload your media to the appropriate platform (YouTube, Vimeo, ArcGIS Online, SoundCloud, etc.) and include the link in your manuscript.

Style notes

  • Use single spaces after punctuation
  • Capitalize proper nouns in species common names (e.g., Chinese Giant Salamander)
  • Italicize binomial names (Andrias davidianus) and Latin terms (in situ, ex situ)
  • Present numerical data clearly with appropriate units

Naming your files

Name your files starting with the first author's last name followed by content type:

hansen-article.docx, hansen-article.md, hansen-figure1.jpg

What happens next

Our editorial team will review your submission and may reach out with questions. We do light editing for clarity and will let you know when your piece is scheduled for publication.
