Carly Muletz-Wolz earned her Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Maryland, USA, and held postdoctoral and research positions at the Center for Conservation Genomics at the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, USA. She is now a Microbiologist at the National Institute of Standards & Technology, USA. Her interdisciplinary research aims to understand how microorganisms impact plant and animal health to improve organismal and ecosystem health. She is particularly interested in how we can use communities of microorganisms, microbiomes, to benefit society and the environment, such as protect hosts against diseases. Her favorite study system is Appalachian salamanders given their incredible diversity in species richness, microbiomes, and susceptibility to disease.
