Phillip Byrne
Professor, University of Wollongong
Focus regions: Australasian
Professor Phillip Byrne is an Australian Evolutionary Biologist with interests spanning Behavioural Ecology and Conservation Biology. His interest in Behavioural Ecology revolves around understanding how the process of sexual selection can shape reproductive traits that determine individual fitness and the evolution of mating-system variation. Professor Byrne co-heads the University of Wollongong's Evolution and Assisted Reproduction Lab (EARL) with Dr Aimee Silla and is primarily focussed on drawing on evolutionary theory and knowledge of amphibian reproductive ecology, behaviour, and physiology to develop innovative Assisted Reproductive Technologies to aid in the protection and management of threatened amphibians. In parallel, Professor Byrne has become increasingly focussed on reducing amphibian extinction risk through research into conservation breeding strategies and innovative approaches to restore genetic diversity and adaptive potential.
